Belgian Linen

Happy new year! I trust that you had a great Christmas & New Year holiday? We had such a lovely holiday – it was such a treat to see so many friends and family & celebrate together.

It seems like quite a long time ago now but just before Christmas I went to Bruges for a couple of nights to get into the swing of the festivities. Those of you who have been to Bruges before will know how incredibly beautiful the city is – I was absolutely bowled over by how pretty all the buildings and canals were. It was especially picturesque with all the Christmas lights up; a million little white lights in trees and wreaths and chocolate shop windows… it was absolutely delightful and I will be booking myself back to Bruges for a repeat visit next year.

One of the fabulous things about Bruges is the shopping – the linen shopping that is. I was in absolute heaven buying up pretty linen napkins and tablecloths and pyjamas – I wish I’d had more room in my carry-on for some bedlinen too. One can never have too much good linen and Belgian linen is some of the best in the world so it really was too good an opportunity to pass up.

Buying good quality linens, whether for tables or beds, can soon add up if you’re getting everything in one go so it’s much more affordable to pick up bits & pieces every now and then and build up a collection. Buy a pair of pillowcases and then expand your set as and when you can. Even if you just get nice new pillowcases they are a luxurious treat and won’t break the bank.

For those of you who won’t be heading to Belgium any time soon, now is the perfect time of year to buy bed linens in the sales. I would recommend the French linen from Soak & Sleep (the blue border-edged linen is divinely pretty) or the embroidered sets from The White Company which are both currently on sale. If you’re looking for something extra special then take a look at the lovely bedlinen from Charmajesty (I am eyeing up their “Scattered Hearts” boudoir travel pillow to take with me on holiday…) whose designs are whimsical, pretty and fresh and above all, beautifully made.
